This is a course in the United Nations English Language Programme.


WELCOME

'Writing for the Web' is a course offered to United Nations staff who currently contribute to a UN-related website.


Course Schedule
All lessons are in DC1-244 on Thursday mornings, 8:30-10:30 a.m.

Lesson 1
4 February

HW:  Read chapters 1 & 2 and prepare the following:
  1. a short 'usability test' that can be done in class.
  2. a 'Persona' depicting a typical visitor to your website.
    See pp. 19-22
11 February Class canceled due to snowstorm.

Lesson 2

18 February 
  • Quiz and discussion about Content!
  • Quiz and discussion about People!
  • Presentations of homework: usability tests and personas
HW:  Read chapter 13 and prepare one of the following:
  1. A 'sustainability plan' for your website.
  2. An e-mail to a copy editor or 'big picture' editor
Lesson 3
25 February
  • Chapter 13 review exercise
  • Discussion about 'Getting from Draft to Final Web Pages'
  • Presentations about sustainability plans.
  • Discussion about 'Web Writing Guidelines' - Should there be some for all of the UN?  What should be included?
HW:  Read chapters 5 and 6, and do one of the following:
  1. Find a 'too long' text on your website and find a way to try to edit it to make it more clear and concise.
  2. Do you use PDF files on your website?  If so, look at them more critically to decide if they were used appropriately.
  3. Be ready to discuss (and show) a change you've made - or plan to make - on your website because of what you've read.
Lesson 4
4 March
  • Review of chapters 5 and 6
  • Discussion about 'Writing information, not documents'', and 'Focusing on your essential message'
  • Brief presentations based on completed homework.
  • A brief look at and discussion about webcast, 2 December 09
    Special Event:
    Discussion forum on “The news media and new media: Challenges and opportunities”. (Organized by the Department of Public Information).

HW:  Read chapters 7 and 8, and do one of the following:
  1. Revise one page from your website, applying all advice presented in chapters 7 and 8. Send/give a 'before' and 'after' to Jodi (and to show the class?) for feedback.
  2. Prepare a short usability test to be conducted in our next class. Your classmates will be your focus group.

Lesson 5
11 March
  • Discussion about 'Designing your Web Pages for Easy Use'', and 'Tuning up your Sentences'
  • Chapters 7 and 8 review
  • Usability Testing
Homework: Read chapters 9 and 10 , and do one of the following:
  1. Revise one page from your website that uses - or would be better if it used - a list or table. Send/give a 'before' and 'after' to Jodi for feedback.
  2. Revise a text (yours or one given in class) making it shorter and using headings to make it more 'scannable'. Send a 'before' and 'after' to Jodi.
Lesson 6
18 March
  • Guest speaker (tentative)
  • Discussion about 'Using Lists and Tables' and 'Breaking up your Texts with Headings'
HW: Read chapters 11 and 12, and do the following:
  1. Find and be ready to show an illustration - from any website - that you feel has been used effectively. Tell us why you think it's good.
  2. Revise some 'unmeaningful links' - from a page on your website, ideally - and suggest how they could be presented better.
  3. Meet with your instructor for 20-30 minutes to discuss your own questions and concerns about how to write better for the web.
25 March No Class
Lesson 7
1 April
  • Make-up class for snow day?
  • Discussion about 'Using Illustrations Effectively' and 'Writing Meaningful Links'; Units 11 and 12 review; presentations about effective illustrations.
